Why Training for Group Leaders at Annual Session?
Since adopting the Minute on Uprooting Racism in 2019, NPYM has continued to work on uprooting racism within our community, and contending with occasions of racial wounding. The Minute states: “Important roles for white Friends include listening directly to and supporting Friends of color, educating other white Friends about racism, and holding each other accountable.” It’s inevitable that slipups, misunderstandings and unintentional woundings will occur at Annual Sessions, so we want to ensure that leaders of AS events at all levels are prepared to deal with them in the moment so as to effectively address racial woundings. Therefore we ask leaders of Worship Groups and Interest groups to attend one of two online trainings during the week before Annual Session so they will feel ready to uphold our strong commitment to social justice.
